As Senior Vice President and General Manager of AMC Networks Broadcasting & Technology, John Barbieri oversees the day-to-day operations of AMC Networks Inc.’s full-service technical division, which provides origination and distribution services to more than 40 national and regional television programming channels, including the popular and award-winning national cable television networks of AMC Networks Inc.: AMC, IFC, SundanceTV, WE tv, and BBC AMERICA (operated through a joint venture with BBC Worldwide). The AMC Networks Broadcasting & Technology Center, located in Bethpage, New York, is a state-of-the-art technical marvel that consolidates both the origination and satellite communications functions in one 62,000 square foot facility.
Under Barbieri’s leadership, AMC Networks Broadcasting & Technology has designed and launched cutting-edge digital and HD distribution and origination operations currently being used by the cable television networks of AMC Networks, the global channels of AMC, SundanceTV, and WE tv, as well as third party clients MSG Network, MSG Plus, MSG Varsity, fuse, and numerous other regional and national sports networks. Barbieri was named to this post in 2005.
Barbieri joined AMC Networks in 1985 as director of transmission and remote engineering for AMC Networks’ Philadelphia-based sports service PRISM, before joining AMC Networks Broadcasting & Technology in 1987. Prior to his current role, he was vice president of engineering for AMC Networks Broadcasting & Technology, where he was instrumental in the design, development, project management and implementation of the AMC Networks Broadcasting & Technology Center.
Barbieri began his career at Cablevision in 1980 as a service dispatcher and quickly moved into engineering.
Barbieri earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Long Island University. He is a member of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).
