SUNDANCE SELECTS TAKES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO IAN CHENEY’S THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO

NEW YORK, NY (December 10, 2014) – Sundance Selects announced today that the company is acquiring North American rights to Ian Cheney’s documentary THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO. The film was directed by Cheney and produced by Jennifer 8. Lee and Amanda Murray. The film had its world premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and will be released on January 2, 2015 theatrically and on VOD. A special advance screening of the film will take place on Thursday, December 25, at 3:00pm at the JCC Manhattan. For tickets and more information, please click here.

THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO tracks the origins of American Chinese food through the titular and ubiquitous dish. In attempting to understand the history and popularity of General Tso’s Chicken, Cheney’s lighthearted film opens a lens onto a larger story of immigration, adaptation and innovation. Traveling through restaurants and Chinatowns throughout the United States, interviewing chefs, scholars and customers, he seeks an answer to who General Tso was and how his name came to grace nearly every American Chinese menu.

“In this film Cheney brilliantly explores how something as small as one dish can have a multitude of cultural implications,” says Jonathan Sehring, President of Sundance Selects/IFC Films.

Says Cheney: “We’re delighted to be working with the folks at Sundance Selects. They have a terrific track record with some fabulous documentaries, and we’re thrilled to be in such great company with THE SEARCH FOR GENERAL TSO.”

Cinetic Media negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers.
