Set in 1960's Paris, DANGEROUS LIAISONS follows the diabolical schemes of Madame de Merteuil (Catherine Deneuve) and Valmont (Rupert Everett), a pair of love cynics who have made a sport of seducing and jilting innocent lovers. With the magnificent imagery of Paris and the French Rivera as a backdrop, DANGEROUS LIAISONS beautifully captures the aura of the times, and the lifestyle of the Parisian elite.
Valmont, a pathological Don Juan, has never met a woman who can resist his charms, except for Madame de Merteuil. Driven by the passion and challenge of ultimately owning her heart, he agrees to partake in her complex plot of deception that involves seeking revenge on Gercourt (Andrzej Zulawski), the only man who has managed to break her heart.
When Gercourt arrives in Paris with news of his engagement to the very young music ingénue Cecile (Leelee Sobieski), the vengeance-seeking Madame de Merteuil is eager to see her former lover destroyed. Offering her love to Valmont as the ultimate prize, she convinces him to seduce, impregnate, and in the end, discard Gercourt's fiancée. However, shortly after conceding to the plan, Valmont is confronted with a challenge far greater than winning the love of Madame de Merteuil; conquering the heart of Marie Tourvel (Nastassja Kinski), an extremely loyal married woman who desperately tries to resists his advances, but falls victim to his calculated schemes.
