IFC Films and Red Envelope Entertainment to Open Award-Winning “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” for 1 Week Qualifying Run

Film to open December 21st at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in Los Angeles

New York, NY – November 26, 2007 – IFC Films & Red Envelope Entertainment will open Cristian Mungiu's 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS for a one week qualifying run in Los Angeles on Friday, December 21st at the Laemmle Sunset 5 in order to qualify for the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), National Society of Film Critics (NSFC) and other awards. The film will re-open officially on Friday, February 1st at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles. In New York, the film will open on January 25 at Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and IFC Center.

Since winning the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Critics Prize and the National French Education Prize, 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS has gone on to win the FIPRESCI International Film Critic's Best Film of the Year award, among many accolades. It is also nominated for 4 European Film Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Screenplay. The Official Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film from Romania, the film was an official selection at the Telluride, Toronto, New York, Chicago and AFI film festivals earlier this year.

Mungiu's staggering 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS is a story of friendship and sacrifice during the last days of Romanian communism. College roommates Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) and Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) are busy preparing for a night away. But rather than planning for a holiday, they are making arrangements for Gabita's illegal abortion and unwittingly, both find themselves burrowing deep down a rabbit hole of stark realities and ugly truths. Transpiring over the course of a single day, Mungiu's film is an immersive masterwork of naturalism, by turns poignant and shocking. The latest in a recent Romanian renaissance (THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU, 12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST), it features virtuosic camerawork by Oleg Mutu (LAZARESCU) and a riveting performance by Anamaria Marinca. This is breathless, bracing filmmaking, which critics worldwide have been heralding since its premiere at Cannes.
