IFC FILMS TAKES STYLISH THRILLER ‘THE ORIGIN OF EVIL’ STARRING LAURE CALAMY (CALL MY AGENT), FOLLOWING VENICE AND TORONTO PREMIERES

FROM WRITER AND DIRECTOR SÉBASTIEN MARNIER FOR NORTH AMERICA

NEW YORK, NY (October 28, 2022) – IFC Films announced today that they are acquiring North American rights to THE ORIGIN OF EVIL from writer and director Sébastien Marnier (Faultless, School’s Out) starring Laure Calamy (Cesar winner for My Donkey, My Lover & I and star of Call My Agent), Doria Tillier, Dominique Blanc, Jacques Weber, Suzanne Clément, Céleste Brunnquell, and Véronique Ruggia Saura. The film was produced by Caroline Bonmarchand with Kim McCraw and Luc Déry of mirco_scope with Avenue B Productions executive producing. THE ORIGIN OF EVIL world premiered at the Venice Film Festival, followed by its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. IFC Films will release the film in 2023.

THE ORIGIN OF EVIL follows Stéphane (Laure Calamy), a modest woman living in financial precarity. When her living situation takes a turn for the worse, she decides to reconnect with her estranged father, Serge (Jacques Weber), who after abandoning her and her mother years earlier, has become incredibly wealthy with a massive estate. As Stéphane enters this new world fueled by secrets and betrayals, she slowly realizes that Serge may not be the genial patriarch she believed him to be. As tension mounts and a cutthroat conflict over inheritance ensues, battle lines are drawn, and nothing is as it seems.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films said, “Led by an incredible talent in Sébastien Marnier and a first-rate cast, THE ORIGIN OF EVIL is a twisty, subversive, and beautifully executed thriller. Marnier is the perfect addition to the IFC family, where we can’t wait to share his wild ingenuity with American audiences.”

Director Sébastien Marnier added, “I’m so grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response to THE ORIGIN OF EVIL upon its world premiere. I’m so happy and proud to have IFC on board!”

The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films’ Head of Acquisitions and Production Scott Shooman with Charades on behalf of the filmmakers. Charades is handling international sales.
