Romance Classics Kicks-Off “Cool Women” Countdown with Week Long Film Festival

Six Film Extravaganza Will Spotlight Real Life Cool Women Who Have Been Portrayed On The Big Screen

BETHPAGE, NY, June 28, 2000 — Passionate, dedicated, selfless, driven and courageous. These terms have been used to describe famous, pioneering women such as Amelia Earhart and Rosa Parks. However, there are many women today who possess these same characteristics and accomplish amazing feats, yet do not receive the recognition that their predecessors do. They are women who have contributed to a community, broken through prohibitive barriers, inspired others, defied stereotypes, led by example, and ultimately fulfilled a dream. They are “Cool Women.”

On August 25 at 8:00 PM (ET), ROMANCE CLASSICS celebrates these women with a new series, “Cool Women” produced by award-winning director, producer, actress, choreographer and cool woman, Debbie Allen. Award-winning singer Patti LaBelle sings the theme song, written by James Ingram.

From the persistent women of the Million Mom March, to the gentle owner of a camp for children with AIDS, “Cool Women” will profile society’s unsung heroes by highlighting their inspiring achievements and exploring the drive that serves as their motivation.

“A cool woman is a woman who knows how to love, live and dream,” says producer Allen. “A woman who knows that in making her dreams come true, she can impact her community – whether it’s one block or a whole nation.”

Cool Women” recounts the tales of women working in relative anonymity to bring a vision into fruition for the sake of their family, friends and community. Each episode of “Cool Women” will feature personal profiles of these women who are celebrated in song, dance and dramatic readings by high-profile celebrities. Naomi Judd, Vivica A. Fox, Camryn Manheim, Phylicia Rashad, Chaka Khan,
Kate Capshaw, Major General Colin Powell, Christopher Cross, James Ingram, Vanessa Bell Calloway
and Jasmine Guy are among the celebrities who appear in the series.

Focusing on a wide variety of today’s women, such as breast cancer surgeons, orchestra conductors, senior-level firefighters and the women of the Million Mom March who fight against guns and violence, the series “Cool Women” celebrates their rigorous work and achievements.

“Cool Women” is produced by Red Bird productions in association with ROMANCE CLASSICS. Debbie Allen serves as Executive Producer of the series. Jeff Eisenberg is Executive Producer for the network.

Romance Classics, a network from AMC, features popular movies and entertainment for women. The network’s programming lineup features original lifestyle and entertainment series, as well as biographies of inspiring women.
