MuchMusic USA Among Top Five Most Popular Television Channels Say Teens

Recent Jack Myers Study Examined Popularity and Usage of 19 Major Networks

New York, NY – December 13, 2001 – MuchMusic USA, the nation’s only viewer driven all-music network, has been ranked among the top five most popular network channels by teens ages 13 to 17 years old according to a new Jack Myers survey.

Myers Media Brand Tracker: Survey of Teens on Media Usage Patterns and Preferences, examined teen attitudes toward the brand equity of 19 major networks and their behavior patterns of daily TV watching and online activity. MuchMusic USA rated number five in this key demographic, scoring higher than NBC, ABC, CBS, UPN, the Cartoon Network, and the Disney Channel among others and was the only digital network rated in the top ten.

“MuchMusic is capturing the attention of teens across the country,” stated Bob Dahill, senior vice president for MuchMusic’s Ad Sales. “Our programming provides viewers with an unprecedented level of interactive involvement and an overall dedication to creating cutting edge cross-platform content. This high rating is important because it means that our visions for a viewer driven all-music network is reaching our key audience.”

In addition to the general ranking, MUCH also ranked third among 13-15 year olds, fifth among overall females teens, and sixth among male teens. In addition, the study showed that 80% visit the Web sites of their favorites television networks and 48% simultaneously watch television while using the network’s Web site.

“We are particularly pleased to be the only digital network in a list of established primarily analog distributed networks. This distinctions validates MuchMusic USA’s viewer driven credo of ‘Get a camera, get online and get involved,” stated Lisa Schwartz, senior vice president for MuchMusic’s Affiliate Sales and Marketing. “MUCH is changing the face of interactive programming with shows like MixTape Masterpiece, Tastemakers, Over Fresh, Random Intelligence and its viewer made video technology. Our fresh and innovative approach to programming an all music network is a competitive alternative to other music programming and we will continue to respond to this key demographic in the future.”
