LOS ANGELES, February 22, 2023 — RLJE Films and its sister brands under AMC Networks, including Shudder and AllBlk, have acquired the North American rights to the horror/thriller, THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER, ahead of its world premiere at this year’s SXSW TV and Film Festival. The horror-thriller is debuting in the fest’s “Visions” category, the special program that champions audacious, risk-taking artists in the new cinema landscape.
RLJE is planning a theatrical release for the film this summer. Shudder and ALLBLK will follow with streaming debuts later this year.
Written by Bomani J. Story who also makes his directorial debut, THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER stars Laya DeLeon Hayes (“The Equalizer”), Denzel Whitaker (Black Panther) and Chad L. Coleman (“The Walking Dead,” “The Orville”). Crypt TV (“The Girl in the Woods”) served as studio and production company with Jack Davis and Darren Brandl as producers, alongside Executive Producers, Jeremy Elliott, Jasmine Johnson and Co-Producer Beth Tashjian.
“’ANGRY’ is a unique story from the great mind of Bomani J. Story and Crypt TV — powerfully brought to life on screen by Laya DeLeon Hayes,” said Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer at RLJE Films. “We cannot wait for genre community to experience the film at SXSW for the first time.”
“Mark, and RLJE, who have championed such gems like MANDY and COLOR OUT OF SPACE, have come to the table in a big way to support Bomani’s scary and insanely original monster film,” said Brandl. “SXSW is the perfect launchpad for THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER, and as Crypt expands into more features, we trust the family of AMC companies to travel this film wide starting this summer, we’re in great hands. ”
In THE ANGRY BLACK GRIL AND HER MONSTER, Vicaria (DeLeon Hayes) plays a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. Inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the dramatic thriller thematically challenges our ideas of life and death following a family that, despite the terrors of systemic pressure, will survive and be reborn together again.

Ward and Betsy Rodgers from RLJE Films negotiated the deal with Brandl and Chris Bonifay of Crypt TV and CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers.
