WE Volunteer Resolution Center Mobile Unit to Tour NYC to Encourage Pledges

NEW YORK, NY, December 17, 2009 – Actress, mother and activist Cynthia Nixon ("Sex and the City") has signed on to support WE tv’s public affairs campaign, WE Volunteer (www.WEVolunteer.tv), and its latest initiative, "Pledge 24 in 2010," which urges women to volunteer for 24 hours in the New Year. Ms. Nixon will help to inform women of all ages about the importance of community volunteerism by appearing in a series of PSAs to air on WE tv in 2010 which carry the theme of the campaign, "What a Difference a Day Makes." The announcement was made today by WE tv’s President and General Manager, Kim Martin and Ms. Nixon, in NYC’s Times Square set against the backdrop of a specially designed mobile "Resolution Center" branded to WE Volunteer, which allows NYC passersby to pledge their 24 in 2010 to their favorite charity.

Ms. Nixon pledged her 24 in 2010 to the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE), a NY state non-profit organization that seeks to give every child a high-quality public education. AQE unites a coalition of over 230 organizations of parents, children’s advocates, schools, teachers, clergy, and others. Working with parents and youth, AQE serves to empower and inspire a life-long commitment to responsible, philanthropic involvement. Since her daughter started kindergarten in 2001, Nixon has been an active spokesperson in the campaign to get more funding for our public schools.

"As a woman, a working mother and a public advocate, Cynthia Nixon epitomizes the WE tv brand and the message of WE Volunteer that volunteering just one day a year makes a difference in the lives of the people and special causes we help," said Martin. "Cynthia is a respected role model for millions of women nationwide. We are thrilled and proud that she is joining WE tv’s efforts to inspire women to give back to their communities."

Ms. Nixon said: "I am so proud to support WE tv’s WE Volunteer and its "Pledge 24 in 2010" campaign. We all know it’s vital that we reach out to help lend a hand. As a mother of two children it is very important to me that our schools help all kids reach their potential. Ensuring access to meaningful educational opportunities for all kids is the most important issue facing city and state leaders. Every child deserves a meaningful education. I will continue to fight for my daughter and my son and all the kids who are currently being shortchanged."

The WE Volunteer "Resolution Center" is a 43-foot branded mobile unit outfitted with digital kiosks, provided by Dell. Lush is providing stocking stuffers to those who come aboard and pledge their time. The "Resolution Center" will be stationed in Time Square’s Military Island (Broadway between 43rd & 44th streets) from 11 am to 1:30 pm; it will then travel to Union Square (Union Square West between 15th & 16th streets) where it will be open for pledges from 4-6 pm.

Each person that boards the "Resolution Center" to pledge their 24 in 2010 will be automatically entered into WE tv’s "Chic in the City" sweepstakes for the opportunity to win a trip for two to New York City to attend a fabulous red carpet movie premiere and after-party, a two-night stay at a boutique hotel, dinner at a trendy New York City restaurant, and a $200 shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue.

In addition to joining forces with Ms. Nixon, WE tv is also reaching out to over 150 non-profit organizations urging their volunteers and members to pledge their 24 in 2010. The non-profit that receives the most pledges will win the opportunity to have their organization’s 30-second PSA air on WE tv’s sibling network, Wedding Central, during National Volunteer Month – April 2010. In addition, the non-profit will be profiled as the organization of the month on WEVolunteer.tv.

WE Volunteer is WE tv’s national effort designed to motivate women to become more involved in their local communities by pledging one full day (24 hours) of community service throughout the year. WE Volunteer is the latest campaign of WE Empowers Women, the network’s four-year-old public affairs initiative dedicated to creating programs that foster and celebrate women’s strength, confidence and diversity. The campaign’s website, WEVolunteer.tv, powered by VolunteerMatch, makes it easy to search for and sign up for volunteer experiences with non-profit organizations based on location and personal interest. The site also allows participants to track the amount of hours volunteered and share their volunteer stories to inspire others.

Ms. Nixon is an Emmy® and Tony® award-winning actress. She is currently in production on Sex and the City: the Movie 2, the sequel to New Line’s 2008 summer blockbuster, which will be released by Warner Bros on May 28, 2010. Born and raised in New York City, Nixon attended Hunter College High School and has a degree in English Literature from Barnard College. She and her fiance Christine live in New York City with their daughter, Samantha, and son, Charlie.
